CHANGE/VARIATION OF THE CONSTRUCTION [DE REPENTE] FROM THE CONSTRUCTION GRAMMAR PERSPECTIVE

Abstract

In this paper, we will be analyzing the trajectory of the construction [de repente] and
its comparison with the construction [perhaps] [talvez] in the light of Usage-Based Linguistics
(BYBEE, 2010; BARLOW; KEMMER, 1999; OLIVEIRA; CEZARIO, 2012; ROSÁRIO;
OLIVEIRA, 2016), of Construction Grammar (GOLDBERG, 1995, 2006; CROFT, 2001; BYBEE,
2006, 2010; DIESSEL, 2015), and mainly in the Constructionalization and Construction Changes
approach (TRAUGOTT; TROUSDALE, 2013). The construction [de repente] has different values,
depending on the synchrony analyzed, according to the collect and analysis of data from Corpus do
Português. In current Portuguese, three uses stand out: the temporal value, the epistemic modal value
and the ambiguous value. Thus, the investigation goes through the variation due to polysemy, since
there is more than one function attributed to the construction and variation due to similarity (cf.
WIEDEMER; MACHADO VIEIRA, 2018a, 2018b), since the construction [de repente], when
assuming the innovative meaning, starts to compete with other constructions, such as [talvez].
