Abstract

The article is an introductory analysis on the critical study of the novel Desde que o samba é samba, by Paulo Lins (2012), highlighting the role of memory, literature as an archive, and fictional narrative as essential themes for the reconfiguration of the canon and national literary historiography. Therefore, the culture of samba and its interlocutions with religions of African origin are problematized, as well as the emergence of the peripheral areas in Rio de Janeiro in the first decades of the 20th century and its role in the construction of an idea of Rio and national identity are considered. The studies of Marília Amorim, Mikhail Bakhtin, Renato Ortiz and Marilena Chauí, among others, help us understand the problems of identity and memory in the reconstruction of the historical series that built a modern idea of art and literature in our country, as it is expected in this
article.
